Evelyn Nien-Ming Ch'ien is an associate professor in the English department and a core faculty member of the Asian American studies program. Her research addresses vernacular literature in English and other languages, as well as literature that arises from diaspora, particularly in Asian-American, Chinese, and Taiwanese culture. Her recent book Weird English describes the ways in which a variety of contemporary authors play with syntax, grammar and orthography to invent new language. She has also published in The New Centennial Review, The Literary Review, Transtext(e)s/Transcultures: Journal of Global Cultural Studies; and the Review of International American Studies. Her work has been reviewed in Library Journal, Choice, Far Eastern Economic Review, The Globe and Mail (Toronto), The New York Sun, The Chronicle of Higher Education, and The Morning Show at KPFA. In the classroom she teaches multicultural literature, Asian diaspora literature, and hip-hop composition and literature.
