You've read 'em, heard about 'em, seen 'em on the silver screen-the 1850s were an unparalleled decade for American classics. This was also the decade of the "run up" to the Civil War, and the remarkably undistinguished presidencies of Taylor, Fillmore, Pierce, and Buchanan.

The goal of this seminar will be to discover what else was being written (and read) during this decade. We will scatter to the four corners of the library to track down personal letters and journals, travel writing, abolitionist tracts and poems, songs, conduct books, temperance novels, campaign speeches, plays, newspapers and magazines, textbooks-anything written in the United States and its territories is fair game.

During the term, each student will be responsible for tracking the public and private writings of one literary figure and one public figure, as well as sampling one magazine or newspaper. This reading might build upon previous acquaintance with the selected writers, or it might go into new territory.
