In the second volume of The Penny Magazine (1833), Charles Knight
published four supplements under the general title "The Commercial
History of a Penny Magazine," which provide an introduction for the
common reader to the history and technology of printing. Hardly noticed
since its first publication, this work provides the modern reader with a
compendious account of printing practices that were common at the height
of the Industrial Revolution. We have reproduced these issues electronically
in two formats: a graphic layout which provides a 72-dots-per-inch (dpi)
digital reproduction of each page of the four articles; and an annotated
text format which includes the full text of the articles, scanned reproductions
of the images which attended them, and notes that document various references.
